Yippee Ki-Yay, Rum Lovers! Y’all got reasons to celebrate as That Boutique-y Drinks Company drops the US release on retail shelves and bars worldwide. And yes, we know it’s possible to overdo the Americanisms…
Our buddies at That Boutique-y Whisky & Brandy Companies have lined up an impressive (and delicious) range of American whiskies - here at Boutique-y Rum HQ, we’re taking a global approach, with a (ten gallon) hat full of fab Rums. We’re revisiting some old favourites, and present three, brand new batch 1 bottlings that take us to new Rum producing destinations.
Epris Distillery (Brazil), Batch 1 - 11 Years Old / 54.4% ABV
Column Still Rum, Single Distillery
It’s very cool to be returning to Brazil, and even cooler to be using this first visit to EPRIS to point that out that just because its made from sugarcane, and its made in Brazil, that doesn’t mean that its going to be cachaça. Brazil makes a lot of spirits in general, and of this, Rum is particularly big. So yeap - a brand new producer - a batch 1 - and it’s Rum!
Production information on this producer is a little light on the ground, but we can confirm that our first foray into Brazilian Rum is both delicious and an exciting extension to our portfolio. Produced from sugarcane juice, this continuous column still distilled Rum, was then matured for eleven years in ex-bourbon cask, American white oak.
This is a really approachable Rum, perfect for drinkers of all experiences. Gifting? Well we’ve all got football mad friends right? Rum and footie feels like a thing!
So how about that label? Well, we all know Brazil is famous for many things, football being right up there eh? But which Futebol Clube have we featured on the label? AERB? Aquela Empresa de Rum Boutique… That kinda sounds familiar. Does anyone speak Portuguese?
Tasting Notes by Boutique-y Pete
Nose: Nutty, Black Tea, Gentle eucalyptus, underripe pineapple, sweet sultanas, and pink grapefruit. Golden syrup.
Palate: Lots of chewy golden syrup flapjacks, with a hint of green apple.
Finish: A cough candy combo of anise and warming cloves, along with astringent oak-y pencil shavings.
Secret Distillery #9 (Fiji), Batch 1 - 20 Years Old / 52.2% ABV
Pot Still Rum, Single Distillery
Our first bottling from Fiji and a wonderful extension to the portfolio. Whilst we cannot reveal the producer, we are convinced that it is going to be really well received. Heavy pot still Rum produced from molasses. Very distinctive in style. Matured for twenty years in ex-bourbon cask, American white oak. The majority of time in Fiji, with a short spell in the UK prior to bottling.
Fijian Rums are really on trend right now, and this is going to be highly sought after. A fabulous introduction to just how good Rums from Fiji can be.
So how about that label? Well, our first foray to Fiji and the South Pacific feels like an adventure, and all self respecting adventurers need a map right? Seriously though, we don’t ‘pirate’ too much over at That Boutique-y Rum Company, and it felt like we were well overdue. Wonderfully fun and irrelevant, and a polar opposite to the serious Rum inside.
Tasting Notes by Boutique-y Pete:
Nose: Green sugar cane bark. A riot of marzipan, lime cordial, parsnips and green olives. Green banana and under-ripe pineapple. Cream cheese and Greek yoghurt.
Palate: Sweet and gentle citrus onto the palate. Sugar cane and creamy vanilla. Tangerine, guava, and delicate spearmint.
Finish: Guava and rhubarb. Fresh green pea-pods, and a gentle smoky, herbal oak-y note.
Secret Distillery #10 (Mauritius), Batch 1 - 11 Years Old / 61.7% ABV
Traditional Column Rum, Single Distillery
We are revisiting the beautiful island of Mauritius with our Secret Distillery #10 release, but this time we’re not at liberty to share the name of the producer. The restrictions around use of name have changed a bit hence the reset to a Batch 1 release. But just to tease you a little, it's worth pointing out that we could have (possibly) released something from this producer... Maybe... Just sayin’.
We can certainly say that this molasses Rum was distilled via a continuous column still, and matured in ex-bourbon cask American white oak. Oh, and it’s completely delicious and a cracking way to dive into the amazing Rum that Mauritius has to offer.
The beautiful island of Mauritius is so diverse in terms of the various styles of Rum it is known for; It really is the whole world of Rum in miniature and we wanted to make a reference to this. How many distilleries do you recognise?
Tasting Notes by Boutique-y Pete:
Nose: Initial waft of blue-cheese, ripe banana and pineapple, raisins, and royal icing. Lots of milk chocolate.
Palate: Soft and sweet onto the palate. Zesty seville orange, delicate notes of strawberry jam, and red seedless grapes.
Finish: More zesty seville orange giving way to candied cherries and tart tamarind. A gentle oak-y grip, and a delicate curry powder spice.
Foursquare Distillery (Barbados), Batch 6 - 13 Years Old / 50.5% ABV
Pot & Column Still Rum, Single Distillery
This is our sixth release from the consistently Award-Winning Foursquare Distillery in Barbados - a producer that really is on trend right now - highly regarded, and highly collectable. A Single Blended Rum (to quote the Gargano Classification): literally a blend of pot still and column still marques produced at the distillery, pre-blended before maturation.
A split maturation of at source in Barbados, and in the UK, this bottling at 50.5% ABV is super easy to drink, the softest one to date - a real treat - and one that will surely be finished in no time at all.
A beach scene in Barbados becomes a spot the hidden reference to all the distillery labels produced there - and one in the past. The Macaws are obviously a link to Doorly’s, and is that Dr McCoy? Pretty sure the ominous looking cave that looks like it might lead to the underworld might have you scratching your head. Oh, and the label revision for Batch 6? Is that a carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic, mostly marine mammal I see?
Tasting Notes by Boutique-y Pete:
Nose: Vanilla and dried coconut. Fresh coconut water, and butterscotch.
Palate: Soft and easy going. Lots of vanilla custard. Zesty seville orange.
Finish: Lots of oak reveals itself, along with some warming baking spices.
Caroni Distilery (Trinidad), Batch 14 - 24 Years Old / 62.1% ABV
Traditional Column Rum, Single Distillery
The famed Caroni Distillery closed in 2002 and brought with it the end of ‘heavy’ rum production in Trinidad. The ever-dwindling stocks become ever more desirable for collectors and Rum enthusiasts alike. We know this and we are as much a fan as anybody!
Such heavy iconic Rum is generally left in the original casks, and released untouched, but here at Boutique-y Rum HQ, we couldn’t help but wonder what Caroni would taste like if it spent a spell (just over 18 months) in Oloroso Sherry octaves that were previously used to produce the Darkness range of whisky. Would the sherry have an influence on the flavour, or would the heavy Trinidad Rum remain unconquered? Our Batch 14 bottling allows you the opportunity to find out for yourself.
Originally created by Jim’ll Paint It, our Caroni label shows an image of one of the distillery's maturation warehouses. The warehouse is visibly run down and abandoned - with sugar cane growing all around it, with a few canes taking root in the walls and on the roof. A Scarlet Ibis - the national bird of Trinidad - brings a flash of colour.
Tasting Notes by Boutique-y Pete:
Nose: Lots of Bakewell Tart and Army & Navy sweets. Bubble-gum. Port wine, gentle anise, and almonds, rub up against the burnt rubber and diesel-y smoke. Tart Victoria plum skins, raspberry, and loganberry.
Palate: Soft onto the palate, chewy. More anise and almonds. Delicate eucalyptus. A hint of blue cheese.
Finish: Smoky bubble-gum, more mint and eucalyptus, almonds.
Don’t forget, the US release is all about Whisky and Brandy, as well as the Rum - so take a moment to check out Boutique-y Dave’s write up on the Grain and Grape!
